Adobe Announces Mac support on their next release of the Production Studio
————-
Well, it’s all over the Web now. Adobe is finally porting over the entire Production Studio to the Mac on its next release… said to be mid-July 2007. The big gotcha, if you read their fine print, is the availability of Premiere Pro, Encore DVD, and the brand-new Soundbooth app is only available for Intel-processor Macs. Maybe it’s not a big deal for the typical DV or HDV editor, who would/should have upgraded their hardware to an Intel processor(s) system.
Another gotcha: what about Adobe Audition? This amazing sound editing package shipped with the current version of the Studio… and is apparently being replaced with the dumbed-down Soundbooth app. And there’s been no mention of a Mac-porting for Audition at all (standalone or bundle). Tsk, tsk.
And don’t take my word for it for panning Soundbooth. You can try out the beta version for free on Adobe Lab’s site. Yawn!
Anyways, once Mac AE users wrap their minds around the Adobe Dynamic Link between AE, Premiere Pro, and Encore, I think open-minded editors will be leaving FCP in the dust. And for HDV editors, there’s native m2t file editing in PPro without the silly Quicktime HDV files that FCP requires. IMHO, filmmakers have embraced FCP simply because its the only serious mid-level NLE for Macs… rather than it being a superior product to PPro. Filmmakers and many creative folks are drawn towards the Mac and often become fierce in their loyalties to Apple and even Apple software. But these same creative types have been using Adobe software for years/decades.
Of course, it was Adobe that abandoned them in the first place once they made the latest versions of Premiere a PC-only application. I guess they’ve learned their lesson… and we’ll see if Adobe can gain back some of that market share.
But, as you can tell, I’m biased of course… not to PCs vs. Macs, but to Adobe’s amazing integration of their Production Studio apps. And right now you have to own a PC to experience it… but not come mid-summer!
NLEs: Bring on the battle!
